Faroese singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Høgni Lisberg has been around in his solo career. From the Teitur-esque 2003 debut ‘Most Beautiful Things’ over pop-rock followup ‘Morning Dew’ in 2006 to this third effort, rooted in blues and presenting the most consistent set of songs so far from the hands of the 27 year old. Ten of them to be exact, and with a total playing time of just over 25 minutes he’s left practically no room for flukes and fillers.
Written by Hogni - as his artist moniker is now - and all instruments played by him and producer James Thomas (Cher, Beth Hart etc) ‘Haré! Haré!’ draws on one big, immediately identifiable influence and reference: Ben Harper. This will probably see him dismissed by some as a lean version of the original, however, the dark, funky blues songs are great and the execution right on. And vocally he’s on fire.
Although it would be easier to name the weaker tracks I’ll keep it positive and just quickly highlight reggae-spiritual ‘Been Out Of Town’, tough retro-rocking ‘Exit!’, laid back funky ‘Burstin’ Bubble’ plus the brilliant single double-hitter ‘Soul Company’ and ‘Bow Down (To No Man)’, both reaching number one the Faroese charts. Three albums in Høgni Lisberg - or Hogni - has really nailed it.
