I first came across this Icelandic quartet November last year when I featured them in the SpaceScan series along with the, now sadly disbanded, musical soul mates Ruhan Daisy (DK). Then, about a week ago, Agent Fresco’s debut EP suddenly materialized and I can’t say that I’m not happy about that. ‘Cause I really am.

Formed in early 2008 with the main purpose of competing in the Icelandic heat of Global Battle Of The Bands (which they went on to win) they released ‘Lightbulb Universe’ in December to rave reviews. A sentiment echoed with a Kraumur Award and an Icelandic Music Award as Best Newcomer in February.

Not a bad first year and when diving into the universe (no pun intended) of Arnór Dan Arnarson (vocals), Borgþór Jónsson (electric upright bass), Hrafnkell Örn Guðjónsson (drums) and Þórarinn Guðnason (guitar/piano) it sounds every bit deserved. These guys can really play!

Recorded, produced and of course written by the four strapping lads, ‘Lightbulb Universe’ offers five songs and an evil intro of their amazingly skilled fusion of metal, jazz, (math)rock and pop, as catchy as it is intricate and demanding with Arnarson’s clear vocal a strong, emotional contrast to the dizzying progressions underneath. A near-calm amidst the storm and with a sense of loss in the lyrics.

Agent Fresco are now working on their first full length release and with this superior first course they have me wanting, no, needing more. And best be sooner than later, if I can have a say.
