Kellermensch: Kellermensch

Kellermensch

The name of the band is inspired by Fjodor Dostojevski’s novel ‘Notes from Underground’, the Esbjerg based Danes are heavily influenced by the German expressionist movement Die Brücke and they are musically related to Tom Waits as well as metal acts like Tool.

So we are not exactly talking bubblegum pop here. We are, however, talking about one very interesting and hard to describe debut album from Kellermensch. Imagine a garage band teaming up with a metal singer (with some heavy anger issues), jamming away, getting increasingly pissed off while tinkering with instruments like a pump organ, violins and a piano for no apparent reason. In a good way, that is.

The album is stunningly original and sounds like nothing we have ever heard before. The most obvious artist to compare Kellermensch to is Serj Tankian. Not because they sound anything like the former System Of A Down frontman, but they are similar in their unpredictability, odd instrumentation and total contempt for normal song structures.

It takes a lot of balls to release an album like ‘Kellermensch’ - and to cover songs by Tom Waits and Neil Young in the process. Luckily the Danish quintet has the talent to match.
