Jenny Wilson: Hardships
I must admit I’ve always had a strained relationship to modern R&B and soul, mainly because of the horrific mass of inane balladry and the generally hollow celebration of glittery surface. On the other hand there’s no denying that the scene has produced massive hits that have had even my miniscule booty move.
Now, why should you know this you might (and rightfully so) ask? Because R&B is what Swedish pop diva Jenny Wilson has made the base of her follow-up to her celebrated 2005 debut, ‘Love And Youth’. ‘Hardships!’ is, however, just about as far from the polished, mass-produced American bling-bling ‘n blah-blah version you can get while still keeping within the confines of the genre.
The compositions are varied throughout and within, loaded with unexpected twists and turns, and tighter than a nun’s, more than once just piano or synth, a discrete beat and light effects accompanying the expressive singer, adding true drama to her no bullshit lyrics about the, well, hardships of motherhood. Lyrics nearing blasphemy in an age of trophy-kids when she admits to be torn between a mother’s duties and the urge to just get up and leave all responsibilities behind.
‘Hardships!’ sports guest appearances by among others Mapei, Simone Rubi and El Perro Del Mar, it’s produced and recorded by Jenny Wilson in her own studio and released on her own label, Gold Medal Recordings, and even though not all 13 songs maintain the high level promised by brilliant first single ‘The Wooden Chair’, it and Wilson are truly an eminent addition to not only R&B, but the Scandinavian music scene in general.
