Based on a few songs on MySpace we featured this Norwegian singer on our “10 albums set to triumph in 2009” list and making predictions like that always comes with a reasonable amount of concern. Because: What if the album sucks?! Wouldn’t that make me look stupid… Fortunately Bellman aka Arne-Johan Rauan has decided not to suck on his debut full length ‘Mainly Mute’ - an album title making little or no sense as it is anything but.

Produced by Lars Klokkerhaug (Motorpsycho, Big Bang etc) it is instead bombastic alternative pop with elements of classical music and grandiose choir arrangements, often reminiscing a monks choir, twisted by thunderous noise(-rock) sequences. And it is in that initially conflicting combination of styles and expressions, kept together by his awesome tenor and his firm grip on the good pop chorus, Bellman fascinates.

First single ‘Spaceship, Move Slow!’ is a grand example - and along with folkish second single ‘Celestine’ the most radio friendly - but his crowning achievement is in imposing, ominous trio ‘Swimsuit In May’, ‘Sleep Forever’ and ‘Requiem’ (the latter slowly building into a roaring, instant-goosebumps crescendo and the best on the album). All as demanding as they are captivating they make Bellman and ‘Mainly Mute’ a very delicate sound of thunder
